Often times, our cars take a beating over the warmer months with higher than normal usage. But the biggest beating comes during winter when vehicles must navigate through snow, ice and road salt. Since cars are a significant investment, it is helpful to keep these tips in mind when it is time to start preparing the car for the winter ahead.

1. Check the Maintenance Schedule: It is possible that you’ve put significant mileage on the car recently due to weekend road trips or even a cross country vacation. Fall is a good time to verify you are up to date with your maintenance schedule. Do you require an oil change or any other routine maintenance before winter arrives?

2. Check Tire Pressure and Status: Statistics indicate that more than half of the vehicles on the road have at least one tire that is under-inflated. Driving on an under-inflated tire will negatively impact the handling and braking of the car. In addition, it is possible that the tire will overheat and blow out. Verify that your tires are inflated to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. In addition check that the tire treads have adequate depth and that the wear is even on them, indicating good alignment. Address any issues observed before the snow starts to fly.

3. Check Fluids: No one wants to experience an unplanned breakdown. It is important to check all fluids including oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, antifreeze and brake fluid. Top off any fluids that need it. If you find you are routinely needing to top off a certain fluid, have the car inspected for an issue.

4. Clean: Consider taking your car to a professional for a thorough cleaning and detailing. Both interior and exterior cleaning will be taken care of for you. Your car will be thoroughly vacuumed to remove any sand, dirt, leaves or grass clippings that have been tracked in. In addition, all windows will be cleaned. The exterior will be washed and waxed, which helps prevent small scratches and chips.

Now is the best time to prepare your car for winter. By taking care of it in the autumn, you will have time to address any issues identified before the snow starts to fall.
