Driving For Uber or Lyft? Info You Need To Know
Will my car insurance cover me while driving for Uber, Lyft or other ride sharing companies?
Well, maybe and maybe not. Most ride share companies have some form of insurance protection for you as a driver, but there may be gaps in both your liability and physical damage coverage that you won’t know about until you have a claim. Then it may be too late. Generally, most insurance carriers will not cover you if you are driving for a ride share company. And if they find out then they could cancel your current coverage. Some auto insurance carriers who insure personal vehicles may also be able to add ride share coverage, but there are a lot of carriers that simply do not have this as an option at this point. You would have to check with your insurance agent or insurance company to see if yours will or won’t provide this coverage.
As time goes by and the ride share market continues to grow, more and more insurance companies will begin offering this coverage. But until then, you should be proactive and make sure you have the coverage you need with whoever you are currently insured with. Unfortunately, ignorance is not bliss in these types of situations, and it could end up costing you a lot of headaches and money down the road.
If you are using your personal vehicle for Uber, Lyft or any other ride share program, please contact your auto insurance agent to discuss the possible risk or gaps in coverage and what options you may or may not have.
Please make sure you talk it over with your insurance agent before driving for a ride share company. There may be options for you to make sure that you are properly protected — such as adding an endorsement to your existing auto insurance policy or obtaining a commercial auto insurance policy to properly cover your risks and exposures.
Please also make note that if you are using a personal auto policy for any type of business use or to make additional income, you should run your specific situation by your insurance agent to make sure you are properly covered in the event of an accident.
Here at ACF Insurance Services, we can help you make sure you are covered properly and guide you in making the best decision possible.
